Fall Directing Program

Duration: August- December (17 weeks)

Application Deadline is February 2nd.

Description:

The Fall Directing Program has three distinct sections.  Our Fall Fellows are introduced to the New York Theatre through an intensive two-week orientation program in mid-August. During the first week, they meet with members of the professional theatre community, attend performances and participate in seminars and workshops with prominent theatre professionals.  These events provide invaluable, concrete knowledge and information, as well as establishing a network of contacts the directors will use both during the program and later in their careers. The second week is an extended directing workshop with a master director and professional actors.

During the second phase of the program, from September through November, each Fall Director completes one or two assistant directing assignments. These assignments are specifically designed for each director’s individual needs and interests in new plays, classic works or musicals.  The Fall Directors will assist on fully-staged productions at major regional and/orNew York theatres with leading theatre artists.

In the final phase of the program, the Fall Directors stage an evening of one-act plays in New York City for an audience that includes artistic directors, producers, and other interested industry professionals, as well as Drama League members and the general public. DirectorFest is produced under an Off-Broadway contract utilizing professional casting directors, designers and production personnel. The Drama League’s artistic director works with the directors throughout the process to help them realize their artistic objectives. Following the production, the directors meet with distinguished theatre professionals for a structured, in-depth discussion of their work.

Four directors are selected for the Fall Directing Program. They are provided with housing during the two-week orientation period, transportation and housing for their regional assignments, and a stipend to cover living expenses.

Eligibility:

  • Fall Program candidates must have completed their undergraduate or graduate degree by the start of the program.
  • Candidates may have come to a directing career after working in another field, but may not have directed regularly at the professional level.
  • Candidates must be available from mid-August until late December.

“The Drama League took a risk and gave me an opportunity no one else would – they produced a play I directed in the heart of New York City and invited everyone to see it.  Every professional opportunity I’ve had since is the result of that chance they took on someone unknown and untested.  I will always be eternally grateful to The Drama League for their belief in me and for the continued nurturing that has endured over the years.”
