The Drama League sends a huge Congratulations to two of our powerhouse alumni, Pam MacKinnon and Diane Paulus. These amazing women of Broadway won big on Sunday night, receiving the Tony Awards for  Best Director of a Play and Best Director of a Musical, respectively, for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Pippin.  Both productions also won in their category for Best Revival.

It is well documented that female directors are having a well-deserved surge in recognition and success.  Back in 1998, the very first Best Director Tony was awarded to a female – two, in fact – when Julie Taymor and Garry Hynes won for directing The Lion King and The Beauty Queen of Leenane, respectively. We are thrilled that these talented Directors Project alumni are continuing that trend of success.

Other Directors Project alumni to have won the Best Director Tony are  John Rando (Urinetown, 2002), and Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening, 2007). We look forward to seeing many more alumni names added to that list in the future!
